How hard can choosing white be?

warm cool whites

Surely if I want "white" on my walls I have the choice of "white" right?  Wrong! There are a plethora of whites of choose from - the base colour is white, but it is tinted with yellow, green, brown or grey turning them into cool whites or warm whites.  The tinting process makes every white a unique colour.

You have true whites (Resene Alabaster), off-Whites (Resene Rice Cake), Creams (Resene Thorndon Cream) & Grey edged whites (Resene Black White) as examples of the range of whites.

How does one determine which white is cool or warm?

On The Resene Range Fan Deck you will see the paint name and a code.  At the beginning of the code there is a letter. Y for yellow or B for brown.  These describe the warmer whites.  Warm whites are great for rooms with less sun and work really well in traditional styled homes.

If the code starts with G for green or N for neutral then these describe cool whites.  Cool whites are great for rooms filled with natural light - usually north facing rooms in NZ - and fit perfectly within modern homes.

A thorough understanding of the colour wheel and the relationship between colours ensures that homes are cohesive throughout.  It enables you to  choose suitable colours that flow and complement each other from room to room.  Sometimes this can be overwhelming, but the good news is that there are experts out there who can assist you with this.
